Parasol Presents Christmas Singles (2000)
- from Illlinois-based indie pop label Parasol Records - mostly local bands from the Champaign-Urbana area, though the label signed many acts from coast to coast, and was very prolific roughly 1999-2004
- they were associated with a record store and mail order service which closed in 2011, but the label's website was still operational as of 2020...
- a number of labels were associated with Parasol, including Mud, Spur, and Hidden Agenda, all of which are represented on these albums...
- the label previously released a tape called Christmas EP at some point (it's on their website but not in Discogs), but only one song appears to be related to the holiday; they also released a 7-inch EP called Happy Holidays!!! Love, Parasol (listed separately), and none of these songs appear on either CD...
- the two albums appear to be all new except for the Voeks tracks, both of which were self-released as a cassette called "Mary Charisma" in 1994 and reissued on 7-inch by Parasol in 1997, and the Neilson Hubbard song, which was released as a single before he signed to the label

Plugged In For The Holidays (EMI Canada, 2005)
- Canadian EMI compilation of largely alternative rock, including several rare cuts
- mostly common, though hardly run-of-the-mill stuff; but, this is the only compilation I know of to ever include Everclear's "Hating You For Christmas," and it's one of just a couple to compile the Kate Bush and Liz Phair tracks; moreover, they managed to pick out a couple of winter-themed tracks by Duran Duran and XTC that appear on no other holiday compliation
- I didn't discover this till 15 years after the fact, but I bought one because a) I knew I would've if I'd known about it at the time b) all the reasons listed above

  1. Home For Christmas (Kate Bush, 1993)
    - b-side of "Rubberband Girl"; only ever compiled on the Eurpean version of Time Life's "Singers And Songwriters: Christmas" (2003)

    - this is the only time I've seen this compiled except on the Target CD it originally came from...
  8. Keegan's Christmas (Marcy Playground)
  9. Deck The Halls (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
  10. Silent Night (Sinéad O'Connor, 1991)
  11. Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer (Smithereens)

The Polar Express (soundtrack, 2004)

  3. Rockin' on Top of the World (Steven Tyler)

Polaroid Christmas http://polaroid.blogspot.com ***** NOT ON WEBSITE *****
- Polaroid ("un blog alla radio," or "a blog on the radio") is an Italian music blog and radio program affiliated with Neu Radio in Bologna. They post a lot of Christmas music during December, including an annual original compilation for download. The blog, and therefore the album, focuses on indie rock and pop - a lot of it European, and all of it obscure to me. In fact, a quick scroll through the track listings yielded not one artist I'd even heard of...
- all the same, I managed to find URL's for all the compilations back to 2007 (the blog itself dates back to late 2001) which, based on the online evidence, is when the tradition began. Amazingly, the zipped files for all but the first were still available, and the individual MP3's were available for that one. So, as I was writing this in 2018, I downloaded them all and stuck them in my "for further consideration" folder of Christmas music where. one day, I might dig a little deeper. For now, though, I'm going to get on with my life, even as the annual "Polaroid" tradition shows no signs of stopping...
- BTW, Stubby's House of Christmas posts about them very enthusiastically every year, but then Stubby is a very enthusiastic guy...

- power pop compilation by Adam Waltemire, host of Florida radio station WMEL's Pop Garden Radio
- https://popgarden.bandcamp.com/album/a-pop-garden-christmas
- mostly pretty obscure, but a few names leap out including Lisa Mychols, Jeremy, Stratocruiser, and Karen Basset (Pandoras, Rebel Pebbles)
- I have always loved Christmas music. Hearing those great Christmas songs every year was always such a huge treat for me. It's no secret that I have written many Christmas songs myself, although most of them were comedy songs and not really for all audiences. I decided over a year ago that this would be the year when I finally gather some of my favorite indie-pop artists to record an album of Christmas music. There are some familiar songs here and a whole lot of original music. I am certain that this collection of songs will be one that people will enjoy for years to come. Merry Christmas!

The other volumes consisted entirely of previously released material. "Pop/Rock Holiday Favorites," however, contained a couple of new tracks - the Donna's "Up On The Housetop" and Curtis Peoples' "Here Comes Santa Claus" - and a couple that had previously been available only as downloads - Kimberley Locke's "Away In A Manger" (2007) and Never Shout Never's "30 Days" (2008).

Power Chords, Harmonies and Mistletoe (Twist, 2011)
- 21-track power pop compilation centered in California but pulling from regions as remote as Wisconsin (Click Beetles), Italy (Smodati), Spain (Los Immediatos), and Australia (The Little Murders)

Power Chords, Harmonies and Mistletoe II (Snap, 2019)
- kind of out of nowhere, this sequel popped up on Bandcamp on a power pop-oriented label from Spain
- again, mostly new material with a few obscure vintage tracks
- again produced by Dean Hoth of the the Eddies, this time with assistance from Bart Mendoza from the San Diego bands the Shambles, the Spring Collection, True Stories, and others
- the whole album is very San Diego-centric and, compared to the original, fairly weak tea...

Psych-Out Christmas (2013)
- vintage and (mostly) new holiday psychedelia compiled by Cleopatra
- it's in Amazon's database several times, and only some instances are connected: original CD (B00EP22QAG), LP (B00ERH13WG), and MP3 (B00HHV458I), a duplicate CD (B01K8KPZGU), and Cleopatra's 2021 reissue CD (B09C9G9Y3R) - so I changed my main link to a search query...
- quite confusingly, the He 5 cut ("Jingle Bells") is actually "Here Comes Santa Claus," which the band originally listed on their LP as "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town"

  1. Christmas Monster Party (Len Maxwell, 1964)
    - from his 20thCentury-Fox LP "A Merry Monster Christmas")

  17. White Christmas (Guitar Stooge Version) (Iggy Pop)
    - newly overdubbed version of 2009 track

Psychobilly Christmas (2008)
- mostly obscure modern punk/rockabilly on the Cleopatra label
- original ASIN B001EQPCWA; instances in Amazon's database proliferated like rabbits, culminating in a formal 2021 CD reissue with new cover art (B09FBHX9G2), so I changed my main link to a search query

  1. We Three Kings (Reverend Horton Heat)
  2. Don't Believe In Christmas (The Tabaltix)
  3. Father Christmas (Los Gatos Locos)
  4. Medley: Jingle Bell Rock / Jingle Bells (Coffin Draggers)

A Punk & Ska Christmas Gone Wrong (1997) B000EBRLBG
Christmas Gone Wrong (1998) not listed in Amazon, best I can tell...
- compilation on California punk label Drive-Thru, reissued the following year with slightly different title, artwork, and track listing
- several new songs added in 1998, as noted, several others omitted (*)
- it's worth noting that the title of the first edition is debatable; the front cover says "It's A Punk & Ska Christmas Gone Wrong," while CD says simply "Christmas Gone Wrong"; the spine says "A Punk & Ska Christmas Gone Wrong," and that's how it's listed in Amazon and Discogs...
- I didn't learn about the original album until many years after purchasing the second edition; I didn't bother purchasing a copy of the original edition, so I don't have copies of the songs that were omitted from the second - which, weirdly, includes the title song...

  1. Naked Christmas (Cousin Oliver, 1997)
  2. You For Christmas (RX Bandits, 1998)
  3. White Christmas (The Impossibles, 1997)
  4. Frosty The Snowman (Unleaded Plus, 1997) *
  5. Grandma Got Run Over By A Raindeer (Less Than Jake, 1997)
  6. Do They Know It's Christmas (Mullets Across America, 1997)
    - the album says it's "led by the Hippos and Cousin Oliver," primarily Ariel Rechtshaid and Romeen "Ro" Sahebi, respectively, who arrange and sing on the track; other vocalists include Bobby from Wank, Jamie from the Shakerz, Linus from Size 14, Louis from the Hippos, Steve from Bonsai Tribe, and some guy named Nick...
  7. Christmas Gone Wrong (Mothermania, 1997)
    - this song is retitled "Christmas Time And I'm Not Smiling" on the 1998 reissue; if you listen to the song, that makes sense, but it seems weird since the album was named after it...

  8. Auld Lang Syne (Wank, 1997)
  9. Mrs. Claus (Size 14, 1997)
  10. Christmas Wrapping (The Shakerz, 1997)
  11. Sleighride (Monsta Zero, 1997)
    - the band apparently changed its name, because the same song is listed by Bonsai Tribe in 1998; I confirmed the fact that the songs are the same with a YouTube posting of the original album, but I have yet to learn much about either group or specifically confirm that they are the same band...
  12. So This Is Christmas (Brian Jones Was Murdered, 1997) *
    - actually John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)"...
  13. Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer (Shower With Goats, 1997) *
  14. What's This? (Fred Wilson FBI, 1997)
  15. Do You Hear What I Hear? (Minimum Wage, 1997)
  16. Dreidel, Dreidel (Ariel Rechtshaid, 1997)
    - listed on the CD as "Ariel from the Hippos" because he is, indeed, from the ska/punk band the Hippos
  17. Christmas On The Moon (Jason Morphew & The King Of The Weirdos, 1998)
  18. Sometimes Christmas Is A Bitch (Truth Movement, 1998)
    - after a period of silence, there's a hidden song embedded in this track; well, sort of... it's a brief, silly, halting, acoustic rendering of a handful of Hanukkah songs by an unnamed artist; it's almost certainly outtakes from the rather similar reading of "Dreidel, Dreidel" earlier on the record, though it could conceivably be Richard Reines, who founded Drive-Thru Records with his sister, Stefanie Reines...

Punk Goes Christmas (2013)
- deluxe edition with extra tracks and new artwork released 2015
- part of extensive Punk Goes series of themed covers albums on Fearless Records
- like most of the series, it employs a rather loose definition of the word, incorporating as much emo- and metal-core as Ramones-style, fast-and-loud punk, even stretching into unabashed pop (cf. Jason Lancaster)
- among the relatively big names that fail to impress are New Found Glory, who barely get above a whisper; Crown the Empire, whose "There Will Be No Christmas" sounds mopey and self-indulgent when it should sound pissed off; The Ready Set, so cute you'll want to strangle them; and Yellowcard, as self-involved and pretentious as ever
- the most impressive (if not enjoyable) track is "This Christmas (I'll Burn It to the Ground)" by Set It Off, described as a "Florida-based symphonic rock quintet"; at the very least, it conveys a punky attitude, even if it sounds like it came from the soundtrack to a Tim Burton movie. Conveniently, it came complete with a very Burton-esque video...
- big ups to the Summer Set for covering an R&B song (Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas"), but their rendition of it is pretty awful (and incredibly annoying)
- Man Overboard's cover of the Kinks' "Father Christmas" doesn't suck, exactly, but a cover of that song is entirely predictable for a project like this, and they add absolutely nothing to the dozens of covers that preceded theirs...
- the best song, and the only real keeper, is "I Had A Heart" by Real Friends, a very listenable track which embraces the "emo" aesthetic so completely that the entire holiday boils down to the singer's failed love life and his subsequent existential crisis. Reduced to spending the day smoking outside his grandparents' house, he opines, "I remember how Christmas used to be before she spat me out and left me to roam this empty place."It feels like she ripped his heart out, he explains, for his family to see. "At least they'd know I had a heart," he shrugs. Oh, to be young!

  1. Nothing for Christmas (New Found Glory)
  2. Fool's Holiday (All Time Low)
  3. I Had a Heart (Real Friends)

Punk Rock Christmas (2012)
- download-only album from Cleopatra
- I originally ignored this because what few names I recognized were performing non-Christmas songs, making it seem rather insignificant from a Christmas perspective - not to mention exploitivefrom a consumer persprective...
